It’s safe to say that we all know what pressure is even when we can’t define it categorically. We’ve felt it at different points in our lives, sometimes light or heavy depending on the weight it comes with. I’d like to define it as the force to show, or become or perform. It cuts across all forms, spheres etc.
Pressure according to A-Z dictionary is seen as an oppressive condition of physical or mental or social or economic distress or a force that compels.
I’d like you to note that it is a compelling force and also an oppressive condition.
Have you ever felt the need to show that you’re not playing with your life? It may be to your mates, superiors, etc. You want to show them that you too are making progress. It can be tiring as well as frustrating. It is possible that you’re making progress or doing something progressive but because it is not yet rated in the eyes of those you want to prove to, you feel pressurized. I’ve felt that many times that I thought I’d be consumed by it. At a point, I was sliding into depression(if that’s the right word for what I was feeling at the time); was not happy with myself, constantly beating myself up for any single time I wasted not been progressive according to standard. It got so bad that I’d silently pray that God should come and take me, then I’d remember he’ll ask what exactly I’ve done with the talent he’s given me. I’d always feel short of his glory even when I knew it wasn’t true… You’ve felt it too right? Enough about that.
WHAT IS PEER PRESSURE? Peer pressure is the influence people within your social circle have around you and how it affects your behavior . It is the constant need to meet a standard before your mates that shows that you have arrived.
HOW TO OVERCOME PEER PRESSURE
The good thing is that we have a manual and a model, it makes our work easier. The seemingly bad thing is that most Christians have time for all things but not time for the manual and the model.
Let’s look at our Model Jesus Christ( in case you’re wondering how he’s our model; take a look at this scriptures, Heb.1:3, Heb.12:2)
Biblical clue: John 7:1-6 Later Jesus was going about his business in Galilee. He didn’t want to travel in Judea because the Jews there were looking for a chance to kill him. It was near the time of Tabernacles, a feast observed annually by the Jews.
His brothers said, “Why don’t you leave here and go up to the Feast so your disciples can get a good look at the works you do? No one who intends to be publicly known does everything behind the scenes. If you’re serious about what you are doing, come out in the open and show the world.” His brothers were pushing him like this because they didn’t believe in him either.
Jesus came back at them, “Don’t pressure me. This isn’t my time. It’s your time—it’s always your time; you have nothing to lose. Does this look familiar?
Have you ever been coerced into doing or showing yourself to create an impression of who you are even when you’re not there yet? Have you ever been hyped “Boss! when your account balance is looking like a radio fm? LOL!😂 let’s not go there.
The behind the scenes moments are very important before you take the stage. It’s the grinding process.
Have you ever seen someone without a track record? He/she just popped out from nowhere and becomes a sensation, and people are beginning to question where they’re coming from. Lemme use a Ponzi for an example, outta nowhere a business starts to trend on social media, people advertise it like if you don’t sign up, then you are on a long road to poverty, after 6 months or one year it crashes or you hear the founder eloped with people’s sweat and tears. That’s what it’s like when you want to be known without any roots to you. We see them everywhere we look, young niggas wadding cash, expensive accessories and gadgets and pressurizing their mates consciously or unconsciously into a need to also show their selves. All you see is the glamour, without checking its roots “you aspire to perspire to backfire (lol)“, a little laugh will do you good.
This doesn’t rule out the fact that their are young people as well, who are putting in the work, behind the scenes, it may not be obvious now that they are making progress, but when it’s time lemme take the words of our Father to you; Isaiah 60:22 When The Time Is Right I, The Lord Will Make It Happen
Dear Incorruptible, just like Jesus said, “my time is not yet come.” Don’t fall into that pressure. You are not lagging behind, At 21, your mates are driving cars etc e no shock you? (pidgin) As God’s own, you can’t mix living a spiritual life with carnal, it just can’t mix. (Romans 8:7-8, Rev.3:15-16) Stay on the Path and await your time.
WHAT TO DO WHILE WAITING:
- Become a master in your craft(whatever your hands finds to do, do it well…Eccl. 9:10)
- Enjoy the Koinonia you have with God(2 cor.3:18)
- Never leave your post.(2Tim.2:4-5)
A call to repentance
If you’re just coming across this family for the first time, and you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus and you’d like to know him as your Lord and saviour; kindly say this prayer with me:
Lord Jesus, I come before you just as I am, naked and not ashamed. I acknowledge that I’ve sinned against you, have mercy on me. I believe that you were crucified died and was buried for my sins. I accept you as my Lord and Personal Savior, in Jesus name Amen.
Congratulations dearly beloved, welcome to the Family of Christ. You are now born again.
